BLIA Sydney
The Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) is a prominent lay Buddhist organization that has made significant strides in promoting Humanistic Buddhism around the world. Established in 1992 by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, BLIA is intrinsically linked with the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist monastic order, the largest of its kind in Taiwan.
BLIA’s history is marked by its rapid expansion and the establishment of chapters across five continents, reflecting its universal approach to Buddhism that transcends cultural and national boundaries. The association was officially inaugurated in Los Angeles, California, and has since grown to include over 200 branch temples and numerous educational institutions.
In Australia, the BLIA Sydney Branch was formed in June 1991, even before the official establishment of BLIA. This branch was created by a group of devotees dedicated to the propagation of the Dharma, cultural exchange, education, and charity work, aligning with the broader goals of BLIA.

Founder – Venerable Master Hsing Yun
Humanistic Buddhism, a philosophy that seeks to make Buddhism relevant to everyone’s daily life. Born in 1927 in Jiangsu, China, Venerable Master Hsing Yun was ordained at a young age and rose to become the 48th patriarch of the Linji school of Chan Buddhism. His vision led to the founding of the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist monastic order and the Buddha’s Light International Association, which have significantly contributed to the global spread of Humanistic Buddhism.
Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s approach to Buddhism is characterized by its practicality and relevance to contemporary life. He introduced the “Three Acts of Goodness”—Do Good Deeds, Speak Good Words, and Think Good Thoughts—at the 1998 Welcoming Prayer Ceremony for the Buddha Tooth Relic. This simple yet profound philosophy encourages individuals to embody the essence of Buddhism in their everyday actions, words, and thoughts, fostering a future where positive change is possible.
Beyond his spiritual teachings, Master Hsing Yun has been a staunch advocate for charity and cultural education. He firmly believed in the power of education to transform character and shape destinies. His efforts led to the establishment of numerous educational institutions, including the Nan Tien Institute, which have become beacons of learning and cultural exchange. His dedication to charity work is reflected in the establishment of over three hundred temples worldwide and various educational institutes across the United States, Taiwan, Australia, and the Philippines. These institutions not only serve as centres for spiritual practice but also as hubs for community service and cultural enrichment.
Master Hsing Yun’s influence extends far beyond the traditional confines of monastic life. His teachings have permeated various aspects of society, advocating for a Buddhism that is lived and experienced beyond the meditation cushion. Through his efforts, he has fostered a generation of individuals who are not only spiritually attuned but also actively engaged in creating a better society. His legacy is one of compassion in action, wisdom in education, and harmony in diversity, continuing to guide and inspire on the path of Humanistic Buddhism.
